My Journey With True Life

My journey with True Life Youth Ministries began in the autumn of 2018, when I attended my first True Life Banquet. I was deeply moved that evening by the ministry’s unwavering commitment to supporting youth in Lebanon and introducing them to Jesus as the source of true life. The staff’s dedication to both their faith and the next generation was evident in every conversation, and I felt drawn to their mission. Inspired by what I witnessed, I decided to join the board in early 2019, hoping to contribute in some small way to what God was doing through this ministry.
My years of board service, from 2019 through 2025, were filled with both growth and challenges. Early on, we launched a significant capital campaign for the current facility, a daunting task that stretched my faith. Praying throughout that process and seeing God move through the generosity of the community to reach the completion of the building renovation was faith building.
Another pivotal moment came, when our beloved executive director, Jerry Higley, announced his retirement. The search for new leadership was filled with uncertainty, but also with unity; our board worked closely together, praying and discerning each step of the process. We welcomed Paul Lane, who brought fresh vision while upholding our core values. It was during this transition that I truly saw God’s faithfulness at work—not just in the outcome, but in the way He unified the board and reassured us through each challenge.
Wanting to engage more directly with the students, I began volunteering to prepare monthly meals for the Oasis Clubs in early 2021. These gatherings offered a hands-on way to build connections with both students and staff. Recently a student who arrived early helped me unload my car and stayed to chop up a large bowl of lettuce. As we worked together, she shared her dreams for after high school and the challenges of moving from Brooklyn to Lebanon. These small interactions with students broaden my perspective. I’ve watched the students grow and mature, learned that most love extra cheese and sour cream in their walking tacos, and noticed their thankfulness and appreciation for the meals. The staff consistently cultivate a welcoming atmosphere and sense of community, with lots of laughter and conversation. As an added perk, I often come away with some good podcast recommendations from Ajay.
Looking back, I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to play a part in an organization devoted to both the spiritual growth and overall wellbeing of young people. My involvement with True Life Youth Ministries has deepened my faith. If you’re considering how, you might get involved, I encourage you to ask God where He might be calling you—whether it’s serving a meal, being on the board, or showing up for a student. Together, we can continue to bring hope and lasting change to the next generation.
